China's dam-building efforts on the Lancang-Mekong river within China and downstream in Mainland Southeast Asia was the topic of a panel hosted by the Stimson Center, in which I had the opportunity to participate on February 18, 2014. Voice of America (VoA) did a story on the panel here.
While a couple of important details didn't come out just right, the overall story was good. One important detail is that China is not considering building a dam on the Lancang (upper Mekong) at this point, but rather has already built over half-a-dozen and is planning at least that many more. These dams, coupled with lack of data transparency and sharing regarding flow and sediment, make many downstream users quite nervous. I recently wrote a story about this for ChinaDialogue
